Now in its third year at Winter Garden City Hall, this exhibition explores the journey of African American artists from the Central Florida community and how their works serve as a testament in preserving time. This exhibition series preserves a small portion of the continuous American struggle, which is an African American struggle that needs to be told so that the importance can be felt year-round. Wonda Granville’s charcoal drawings capture the day-to-day people of her community in a deeply relatable way. She sees her art as "the amusing art of telling stories” and as a platform to honor individuals. Wonda was born September 4th, 1960, in Sanford, Florida, and shaped by life in rural Oviedo. She proudly identifies as a "Southerner," deeply rooted in her Southern heritage. Her art serves as a medium for narrating the tales of her family, friends, and acquaintances, and the connection between people and nature. She is fueled by the belief that all people are divine masterpieces, and draws thematic inspiration from her Grandmother Marie, a figure she compares to the resilience of an Oak tree. Wonda's artistic influence stems from the works of Stephen Scott Young’s portrayal of Black individuals. Wonda says, “I have been painting for as long as I can remember…Art inspires me to see beauty in everything, flowers, trees, dogs, pies, and especially people.” She is a self-taught artist who holds both a BS and an MBA, and has exhibited in several local group exhibitions. In 2024, she received the Edyth Bush Charitable Foundation Purchase Award at the 65th Annual Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival. Two additional artists, to be confirmed, will exhibit their works along side of Wonda Granville.
